Offering Ductless AC Systems in Birmingham, AL
Gas Engineers is Birmingham-owned since 1959, and in our 50+ years of service, along with Sullivan Service Company, we’ve been on the cutting edge of technology. This means bringing our customers the latest and greatest in air conditioning services and systems. One system that has become increasingly popular in recent years is the ductless mini split.
Ductless air conditioning and heating units are heat pumps with a very unique design. They provide effective cooling in the summer, but in the winter are able to change directions thanks to a reversing valve, providing sufficient heating. What makes them different is, as the name implies, the fact that they require no ductwork! Contact us today to see if a ductless system is right for your home.
How Does a Ductless System Operate?
As we mentioned above, ductless mini splits are similar to heat pumps. However, rather than using ductwork to distribute air, they utilize individual air handlers which are installed in different areas of your living space that need climate control. A single outdoor unit can usually support up to four indoor air handlers, and each of these air handlers has its own thermostat, allowing for zoned cooling and heating.
As with other heat pumps, ductless heating and air conditioning systems function by evaporating and condensing refrigerant to transfer heat from one area to another. When in cooling mode, each air handler evaporates refrigerant to absorb heat from inside their respective room. The refrigerant gas is then sent outside, where it’s condensed into liquid again to release the collected heat outside of the home. In heating mode, the opposite happens, with heat being collected from the air outside and released into the home.
Is a Ductless Mini Split Right for Your Home?
Ductless heating and ductless air conditioning in Birmingham, AL has certainly grown in popularity among homeowners. But that doesn’t mean they’re the right choice for everyone. The main reason many choose to go this route is because ductless technology gives them complete control over their home comfort—the zoned heating and cooling allows for minimal energy waste.
Additionally, ductless systems don’t have to burn fuel to generate heat, which makes them particularly energy efficient and appealing to Birmingham area residents, since we have relatively mild winters to begin with. Ductless systems are best in homes with multiple rooms or multiple stories, since some rooms may certainly have different temperature needs than others.
Keep Your Ductless System Healthy with Routine Maintenance
Since ductless systems operate on heat pump technology, it’s essential that you have maintenance done twice a year. The ideal time to schedule maintenance is right before the system’s heaviest period of use. In the Birmingham area, that typically means the beginning of spring to prepare for efficient air condition, and during fall when you’re getting ready for the cooler temperatures again.
A ductless mini split is a year–round system, which means it works a lot harder than a central air conditioner or furnace, both of which get seasonal breaks. Ask about our Comfort Zone Service Agreement. This maintenance program offers you a 13–point heating system and cooling system analysis twice a year, and by enrolling you’ll earn savings opportunities as well as priority service. Contact us any time of day or night to learn more. Can’t afford a brand new unit? No problem, we offer used heat pumps, too. Give us a call to see what is available.
